DA case : Frame charges against TN Minister, Madras HC tells Spl Court

Chennai, Apr 23 (UNI) The Madras High Court on Wednesday set aside the discharge order an directed a Special Court in Vellore to frame charges as per law against senior leader of the ruling DMK and Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan and his family members, hold trial

on a daily basis and dispose the Disproportionate Assets case against them in six months.

Mr Justice P Velmurugan passed the orders on the Revision petitions filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), challenging the Special Court order in Vellore discharging

Mr Duraimurugan and his family members from the case.

The judge said since the check period in this case was between 1996 and 2001, the Special Court was directed to dispose of the case within six months by conducting the trial on a day-to-day basis.

The prosecution case was that Mr Duraimurugan, who is also the DMK General Secretary, had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 3.92 crore in his name and in the names of his family members during his tenure as PWD Minister between 1996 and 2001.

The case was registered by the DVAC in 2002 under the Prevention of Corruption Act alleging

that the Minister had amassed wealth in his name and in the name of his family members disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The Special Court Vellore had on February 23, 2007 discharged Mr Duraimurugan, his wife D.Santhakumari, son and Vellore Lok Sabha MP D M Kathir Anand, daughter-in-law K.Sangeetha

and Minister's brother Durai Singaram, from the case.

On a revision petition filed by the investigating agency against the Vellore Special Court, the Madras High Court today set aside the discharge order and directed framing of charges against the Minister and his family members and dispose the case in six months.
