Maharashtra to set up Help Desks for rehabilitation of juvenile offenders

Mumbai, Apr 5 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has approved a proposal by philanthropist Azim Premji to set up help desks in the observation homes of the state to provide legal, social, counseling services on children's rights and for rehabilitation of juvenile offenders.
According to an official media statement, the agreement will be signed between Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Juvenile Justice Resource Cell (RCJJ) and the Women and Child Development Department, Government of Maharashtra for the rehabilitation of children in conflict with law (CCL).
Chief Minister Fadnavis said that the establishment of the ‘Help Desk’ is an attempt to treat CCL children with respect and compassion and is a means of helping them by listening to their socio-legal doubts and complaints. This is an attempt by the government to transform these children into useful citizens for the society by providing them with proper guidance at an early age.
Issues related to children in legal cases are not only serious issues of human rights but also of sustainable human development.
He said that rehabilitating such children is an essential and noble responsibility of the Maharashtra government.
The Chief Minister expressed his belief that after the establishment of this Help Desk, the legal process will be better understood, exploitation and misunderstanding of children will decrease, transparency and confidence of children in the judicial process will increase, their rehabilitation and reintegration into society will be promoted, the statement added.
