WCK says suspended operations in Gaza after running out of supplies

Gaza, May 8 (UNI) US-based humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen (WCK) said it is suspending operations in the Gaza Strip due to the depletion of cooking supplies after Israel closed border crossings into the enclave.
"After serving more than 130 million total meals and 26 million loaves of bread over the past 18 months, World Central Kitchen no longer has the supplies to cook meals or bake bread in Gaza. Since Israel closed border crossings in early March, WCK has been unable to replenish the stocks of food that we use to feed hundreds of thousands of Gazans daily," the organization said in a statement on Wednesday.
WCK's large field kitchens have run out of ingredients to cook meals, and its mobile bakeries have run out of flour, the statement read. The organization is still distributing drinking water to Palestinian families where possible, the statement noted.
The organization added that trucks with food and cooking fuel have been parked at the Gaza border since early March, and additional aid is also ready to be sent to the border from Egypt and Jordan. However, the organization's work cannot continue unless Israel allows the aid to enter, the statement said.
On March 18, Israel resumed strikes on the Gaza Strip, citing Palestinian movement Hamas' refusal to accept the US plan to extend the ceasefire, which expired on March 1. Israel cut off electricity supply to a desalination plant in the Gaza Strip and closed off entry to trucks carrying humanitarian aid.
