Sri Lankan Catholic Bishops' Conference urges govt to find culprits of 2019 Easter bombings

Colombo, Apr 17 (UNI) The Catholic Bishops' Conference in Sri Lanka in its special message for the upcoming Easter celebrations, urged the government to find the perpetrators and accomplices of the deadly terrorist attack in 2019, terming it a matter of great national urgency.
According to the Daily Mirror, a signed message was released by the President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference in Sri Lanka, Bishop Harold Anthony Perera and Secretary General Bishop Anthony Jayakody, stating that this Easter marked the sixth anniversary of the terror attack by Islamic extremists.
The letter read: "This Easter also marks the sixth anniversary of the Easter Sunday bomb attacks on innocent worshipers at Catholic and other Christian Churches and in other places in 2019, causing death and injuries to hundreds of people.
“In this regard, we observe that certain positive steps have been taken by the present government to ensure an independent and impartial inquiry into this brutal attack.”
Asking the government to find the culprits, it added: “While we appreciate the efforts made so far, we insist that as a matter of urgency and justice, the final aim of the inquiries should be to ascertain who the perpetrators are and those who have aided and abetted in the dastardly act.
“We shall continue to pray earnestly for wisdom and courage for the leaders of our country, as well as solace and healing for the victims.”
The Easter bombings of 2019 led to the deaths of over 290 people, when Islamic radicals tied to ISIS, conducted a series of coordinated bomb attacks across three churches and three luxury hotels in Sri Lanka.
One of the most lethal terror attacks in the country, authorities in Colombo have so far not found the perpetrators of the attack, allegedly due to the politicisation of the issue.
