No Pakistani nationals staying in Mizoram amid Centre’s expulsion order

Aizawl, Apr 27 (UNI) Following the Centre’s directive asking Pakistani nationals to leave India in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, Mizoram appears to have no Pakistani visa holders currently residing in the state, officials said on Sunday.
Officials from the Foreigners’ Registration Office (FRO) in Aizawl confirmed that any Pakistani seeking to enter Mizoram would be required to obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP) and that records show no Pakistani nationals have entered the state in recent times. Historically too, Mizoram has seen negligible footfall from Pakistan, either by tourists or others, they added.
“Visitors from certain countries must secure a PAP before travelling to three northeastern states bordering Myanmar — namely Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland — in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA),” officials explained.
The protected area regime, first relaxed in 2010 for a year to promote tourism in these three states, was subsequently extended for another five years. The latest relaxation order, issued on December 16, 2022, was initially meant to be effective till December 2027. However, the MHA rescinded the relaxation in December 2024, reinstating the stringent rules under the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order, 1958.
In a communication to the Chief Secretaries of Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland, the MHA informed that visitors must once again obtain prior clearance before entering the states, marking an end to the 14-year relaxation.
Meanwhile, intelligence sources have reportedly urged the Mizoram government to bolster security measures following the J&K attacks.
Security tightening is particularly advised along Mizoram’s borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, as well as interstate borders with Assam and Tripura, to thwart any attempts by terrorists to infiltrate.
State home department officials also noted that vigilance has already been increased, especially along the Bangladesh frontier, after Sheikh Hasina’s removal from office in August last year.
