North Karnataka contractors threaten stir over Rs 20,000 cr dues

Dharwad, July 3 (UNI) The North Karnataka Contractors' Association has demanded the Karnataka government immediately clear the dues amounting to ₹20,000 crore across various departments. The association has threatened protests if payments are not made soon.
Addressing the media, association president Subhash Patil today said that contractors in north Karnataka are under severe financial distress, with works stalled and several members reaching their credit limits.
“In total, ₹20,000 crore is pending — ₹4,000 crore from the Public Works Department, ₹5,000 crore from Major Irrigation, ₹2,000 crore from Minor Irrigation, and around ₹6,000 crore from other departments, including Rural Development, Panchayat Raj, Housing Board, and Slum Board,” he said.
Patil alleged that while contractors from other districts are getting their bills cleared under political pressure, those from North Karnataka are being neglected. “Our MLAs and ministers are showing no interest. We are forced to continue work, but payments are not being processed. Some contractors have already withdrawn due to mounting debt,” he added.
He also criticized irregularities in bill clearance. “New contractors are being paid, while those who’ve completed earlier works are ignored. There’s no transparency in the payment system, especially within the PWD,” he said.
The association warned of intensified agitation, including protests outside the homes of MLAs and ministers. "If the government and our elected representatives don’t act, we will hold mass protests and launch public awareness campaigns through TV and other media,” Patil said.
He also expressed disappointment over the Chief Minister’s inaction despite having delegated powers for negotiation. “If this situation continues, we may even demand a separate state for north Karnataka,” he warned.
The association has urged the state government to immediately release pending payments and ensure fair treatment for contractors across all regions.
