Odisha: Body of 4.8-feet male Crocodile retrieved from River in Kendrapara

Kendrapara, May 13 (UNI) Forest personnel from Bhitarkanika National Park on Tuesday recovered the body of a 4.8-feet-long male estuarine crocodile from the Kochia river bank near Silapokhari village in Rajnagar block.
According to Manas Kumar Das, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) at Bhitarkanika National Park, the crocodile’s body, which bore injury marks, was sent to the local veterinary office for a post-mortem examination.
While the exact cause of death is yet to be determined, forest officials suspect the crocodile may have died from suffocation after becoming entangled in a fishing net, or possibly from an attack by a larger reptile.
Das stated that the forest department is awaiting the autopsy report from the veterinary officer in Rajnagar to confirm the cause of death.
In a related development, Bhitarkanika National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary have enforced a ban on the entry of tourists and local residents from May 1 to July 31. The restriction aims to provide a disturbance-free environment during the breeding and nesting season of crocodiles.
Forest officials noted that crocodiles tend to become more aggressive if disturbed during this sensitive period, and most crocodile attacks typically occur during the nesting season.
