Odisha Chhatra Congress holds Mashal Rally, demands 27 percent reservation for OBCs in Education and Jobs

Bhubaneswar, May 20 (UNI) Activists of the Odisha Chhatra Congress organized a Mashal (torch) rally on Tuesday night, starting from Congress Bhawan, to demand 27 percent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in both higher education and government jobs.
The rally, led by Chhatra Congress President Udit Pradhan, proceeded towards the Chief Minister’s residence but was intercepted and stopped by the police.
Addressing the gathering, Pradhan stated that thousands of OBC students are being deprived of opportunities due to the lack of adequate reservation in higher education and employment.
He urged the state government to immediately implement a 27 percent reservation policy for OBC students.
Pradhan pointed out that while OBCs constitute 54 percent of Odisha’s population, they have not been granted reservation in higher education and are currently allotted only 11.25 percent reservation in jobs.
He warned that the Chhatra Congress would launch statewide demonstrations if the government failed to provide 27 percent reservation for OBCs in both education and employment.
The Odisha Cabinet recently approved 11.25 percent reservation for OBC students in education. The government also announced that OBC students would soon receive reservation benefits in medical and engineering courses.
The Chhatra Congress further demanded a special recruitment drive to compensate OBC candidates who were previously denied opportunities due to the absence of reservations.
Additionally, they urged the government to implement 38.75 percent reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in technical and medical education, under a 2015 government order.
They also called for the application of these reservations in private educational institutions under Section 15(5) of the Constitution.
