Odisha: Five sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering woman

Bhubaneswar, Apr 26 (UNI) Additional District Judge of Jharsuguda court, Subash Chandra Dhal, has awarded life imprisonment to five accused involved in the murder of a woman who was suspected of being affected by black magic.
Along with life imprisonment, the judge also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on each of them, stating that in default of payment, they would have to undergo an additional six months of imprisonment each.
The convicted persons have been identified as Santoshini Jayapuria, Soudamini Jayapuria, Sahadev Jayapuria, Naveen Bhoi, and Akshay Jayapuria.
According to the prosecution, Yutsa Jayapuria was murdered on March 2, 2017, on suspicion of being affected by black magic in Bijapali village under the Rengali police station limits in Jharsuguda district.
The victim’s sister, Mamata Jayapuria, had filed a complaint regarding the incident at the Rengali police station.
On the day of the murder, a Shiv Guru Puja was held at the house of Dolamani Jayapuria in Bijapali village.
Dolamani's daughters, Santoshini Jayapuria and Soudamini Jayapuria, had organized the puja at their house.
The victim, Yutsa, along with her father, mother, and her sister Mamata (the complainant), had gone to Dolamani’s house to attend the puja.
During the ceremony, it was claimed that the spirit of Shiv Guru entered the bodies of Santoshini and Soudamini, and they alleged that Yutsa was affected by an evil spirit (black magic).
They declared that the spirit would leave her if her head was shaved.
Accordingly, around 8 p.m., they conducted a ritual and completely shaved Yutsa’s head. In addition, Santoshini and Soudamini beat their sister mercilessly and danced on her body.
To drive away the so-called evil spirit, they stripped her naked and burned her body with incense sticks.
The torture escalated when they repeatedly attacked Yutsa’s head with stone statues of a bull and a trident. Due to the repeated assaults, Yutsa died on the spot after some time.
Following the incident, Mamata filed a complaint at the Rengali police station. Given the sensitive nature of the case, it was transferred to the Crime Branch for an impartial investigation and to ensure exemplary punishment for the culprits.
A thorough investigation was conducted by the Crime Branch, led by Inspector Sabita Sahu.
Based on various aspects of the case, including witness statements and the confessions of the accused, a chargesheet was filed against the seven accused on June 28, 2017.
