Odisha: Youth sentenced to 20 years RI for kidnapping, raping minor girl

Kendrapara, Apr 24 (UNI) The Additional District and Sessions Judge-cum-Special Court under the POCSO Act in Kendrapara on Thursday sentenced a youth to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.57,000 for kidnapping and raping a minor girl.
Special Public Prosecutor Manoj Kumar Sahoo said the convict, identified as Jagan Samal of Gandikipur under Kujanga Police Station in Jagatsinghpur district, had kidnapped a 17-year-old girl from the Tantiapala Marine Police Station area on November 18, 2020.
The victim’s father lodged an FIR at the Tantiapala Marine Police Station on November 19, 2020. Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case, apprehended Jagan Samal, and rescued the minor girl on March 14, 2021.
Jagan Samal was produced before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
While adjudicating the case, Additional District and Sessions Judge-cum-Special POCSO Court Judge Prangya Paramita Raul sentenced Jagan Samal to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.57,000, after examining the evidence and cross-examining 11 witnesses.
The judge also ruled that if the convict fails to pay the fine, he will undergo an additional one year of rigorous imprisonment, the Special Public Prosecutor said.
Additionally, the court recommended that the government provide a compensation of Rs.6 lakh to the minor victim for her proper rehabilitation. The court directed the Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Kendrapara, to initiate steps for the sanctioning of the compensation amount, Sahoo added.
