Onco surgeons at SUM Hospital perform a rare surgery on a lung cancer patient

Bhubaneswar, Mar 18 (UNI) Onco surgeons at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, have successfully conducted a rare and complex surgery to remove a cancer-affected portion of the lung in a 45-year-old woman.
The patient, who had been experiencing persistent symptoms and coughing up blood, was initially misdiagnosed with tuberculosis at another hospital.
Seeking further treatment, she approached the IMS and SUM Hospital, where she was evaluated by the Department of Pulmonary Medicine under Prof. (Dr.) Banani Jena and Prof. (Dr.) Rakhi Ludum.
Upon examination, they diagnosed her condition as lung cancer, following which she was referred to the hospital’s Onco Surgery department.
“We identified her case as Mucoepidermoid Cancer of the left main bronchus involving the left upper lobar bronchus,” said Dr. Sunil Agrawal, Head of the Department of Onco Surgery.
Dr. Agrawal, who led the surgical team, explained that this type of cancer is extremely rare, occurring in only one in 2 million people.
After receiving counseling, the patient underwent a complex surgery lasting more than five hours recently.
Dr. Saravana Rajamanickam, a Surgical Oncologist specializing in lung cancer at the Thangam Cancer Center in Tamil Nadu, guided the procedure.
The affected portion of the lung was completely removed in a procedure known as ‘Sleeve Resection,’ Dr. Agrawal said.
Dr.Agarwal said the patient was discharged from the hospital after seven days and is recovering well.
