Openers light up Eden Gardens as PBKS set 202 target for KKR

Kolkata, Apr 26 (UNI) Punjab Kings rode on explosive knocks by Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh to post a formidable 201 for four against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their IPL 2025 match at Eden Gardens here on Saturday.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Punjab's young opening pair made full use of the conditions, racing past the 100-mark in just 10 overs.

Priyansh Arya, in particular, was in a belligerent mood, getting off the mark with a boundary off the very first ball and consistently finding the fence thereafter. He brought up his half-century with a fine glance past fine leg, eventually scoring 69 off 35 balls with 8 fours and 4 sixes before falling to Andre Russell (11.5 overs), caught by Vaibhav Arora at deep mid-wicket.

Prabhsimran Singh complemented him perfectly, unleashing a flurry of innovative strokes, including switch-hits and slog sweeps, to keep the scoreboard ticking. He reached his fifty with a deft late cut off Chetan Sakariya and later smashed three sixes in quick succession off Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine.

Prabhsimran’s exhilarating knock ended at 83 off 49 balls when he lofted a tired shot straight to Rovman Powell at long-off (14.3 overs).

Glenn Maxwell briefly threatened with a reverse-swept boundary but was bowled by a skiddy delivery from Chakaravarthy (16.4 overs), as Punjab lost some momentum in the middle overs.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer (25* off 16) then took charge in the death overs, hammering a six off Russell and a lofted boundary over extra cover off Vaibhav Arora. Josh Inglis (11* off 6) provided a late flourish, reverse-swiping his first ball for a boundary and clipping another four off Russell in the final over, exploiting the gap between deep mid-wicket and fine-leg.

Among the KKR bowlers, Vaibhav Arora (4-0-34-2) impressed with his variations, accounting for the key wickets of Prabhsimran and Marco Jansen. Varun Chakaravarthy (4-0-39-1) and Russell (3-0-27-1) chipped in with crucial strikes, but overall, the hosts were made to toil in the field.

Punjab scored 65 runs in the Powerplay and accelerated impressively thereafter, with the fall of wickets recorded at 120-1 (Priyansh Arya, 11.5 ov), 160-2 (Prabhsimran Singh, 14.3 ov), 172-3 (Glenn Maxwell, 16.4 ov) and 184-4 (Marco Jansen, 18.3 ov).

Punjab will now back their bowlers to defend the total on a slightly two-paced surface under lights.
