Pak may target militant hideouts in Afghanistan

Islamabad, Mar 19 (UNI) Pakistan-Afghanistan ties are getting further worsened as Islamabad prepares to launch a massive military operation against militant and terror groups operating from Afghan soil and responsible for a series of terror attacks, including the hijacking of a train in restive Balochistan province.
There has been a spurt of terror attacks in various cities of Pakistan in the recent months, killing hundreds of security personnel, media reports said.
Pakistan believes that the Taliban government is providing shelter to outlawed Tahreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, Balochistan Liberation Army and IS militants and is not taking any actions against them despite assurances given in this regard to the Sharif government. It claims that Afghanistan is a safe sanctuary for these terror groups in Khandhar, Khost and Paktia provinces.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif held a parliamentary committee on national security meeting yesterday to finalise an action plan to combat terrorism in all its manifestations and forms.
Pakistan air forced struct hideout of terror groups in Afghanistan few months back in retaliation of attacks in Khyber Pakhtoonkhaw and Balochistan. The committee, consisting of the top civil-military brass, resolved to deal with the terrorist groups with an "iron hand".
Defence Minister Khawja said: "If we have to resort to hot pursuit and enter [Afghanistan] to eliminate our enemies, we will do so. This is a matter of Pakistan's national security, not friendship. A [lenient] approach will be detrimental to our security."
The defence minister underscored Pakistan's right to target those who threaten the country's existence, military, and citizens. "We will pursue our enemy, regardless of where they are."
Pakistan, as per a Global Terrorism Index 2025 report, has emerged as the second-most terrorism-affected nation in the world. Placed at the second spot from its previously fourth position — witnessed an alarming 45 percent increase in terrorism-related deaths with the total rising from 748 in 2023 to 1,081 in 2024 — one of the steepest surges globally.
