Plan in pipeline to host NZ Sport Climbing Championship :MAJK

Jammu, Apr 14 (UNI) Depending on the subject to availability of Sport Climbing Wall and allotment of the championship to the Association by Indian Mountaineering Foundation, the Mountaineering Association of Jammu and Kashmir (MAJK) on Monday said that plan is in the pipeline to host the North Zone Sports Climbing Championship here at Maulana Azad Stadium.
The Mountaineering Association of Jammu and Kashmir has set an ambitious target of preparing at least three sport climbers of J&K for selection in the Indian Sport Climbing team for participation in next year’s 20th Asian Games to be held at Aichi and Nagoya in Japan.
Highlighting the details of the activities including calendar of activities for the year 2025-26, released here at a function, Ram Khajuria, senior Vice President of MAJK said that the activities to be undertaken by the Association and its affiliated District Mountaineering Associations and adventure clubs this year included prestigious multi peak Mountaineering Expedition in Ladakh in which the team would attempt five peaks.
He also stated that it was a matter of pride for the Association that one of its climbers, Shivani Charak, an international sport climber, has the unique distinction of being the first ever and the only female athlete of J&K to participate in any Asian Games during the last 78 years.
Former Union Home Secretary, Anil Goswami, along with Ashwani Sharma, former Legislator, Padma Shri Prof Lalit Magotra, President Dogri Sanstha; Sumit Khajuria, Vice President; Shawetica Khajuria, General Secretary of MAJK were among those present on the occasion.
Another important activity of the Association would be a UT-level Sport Climbing Championship for Visually challenged climbers at the Sport Climbing Wall in October, 2025, he said adding that 16 District Sport Climbing Competitions will also be organized with a UT Championship besides participation in the Zonal and National competitions.
Nine trekking expeditions, a specialized training camp for Shivani Charak under a National coach, four preparatory camps before participation of the U T team in the Zonal and National climbing competitions besides a camp for beginners shall also be conducted.
“To spot the talent at the grass root level the Association aims to train about 1000 sport climbers by organizing coaching cum competitions for school students throughout the year,” he said.
Meanwhile, releasing the calendar of activities, Goswami hoped that this year our climbers would bring more laurels to the UT in all the forthcoming Sport Climbing Competitions.
Ashwani Sharma asked the Sports Council for early completion of the Sport Climbing Wall at MA Stadium, Jammu so that our climbers can undergo training and coaching at Jammu instead of outside J&K.
He hoped that with the commissioning of the climbing wall at Jammu J&K was sure to become a formidable force at the national and international level.
