Polavaram project will be completed by June 2026 under phase 1: Minister

Vijayawada, Mar 17 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Minister for Water Resources Development Nimmala Rama Naidu on Monday announced in the Assembly that the Polavaram project will be completed by June 2026 under phase-1 and the R&R process will also be over.

The Minister announced this during the question hour in the house.
He said the Government is giving much importance to extend compensations to the evacuees and assured of doing justice to them.
“The Coalition Government gives much priority to the construction of the Polavaram project, and at the same time, it gives the same priority to the well-being of the displaced people who sacrificed their valuable lands, properties and houses for the project is equally important,” Naidu said.

Nimmala asserted that by correcting the mistakes made by the previous YSRCP regime, the coalition government would complete the R&R package for 41.15 meters under Phase-1 by June 2026. “The estimates for the R&R package for 45.72 meters in Phase-2 have also been prepared and brought to the attention of the Central Government.
The R&R funds due for the second phase will also be secured, and the project will be completed for 45.72 meters, thereby providing justice to the displaced people,” he revealed in the Assembly.

The Minister recalled that there was no mention of Phase-1, Phase-2, 41.15 meters, 45.72 meters respectively in the Polavaram project until before the 2019 elections. However, after Jagan Mohan Reddy came to power, the then government had brought the issues of 41.15 meters, 45.72 meters, Phase-1, and Phase-2, he decried.

Observing that the Telugu Desam Government had also obtained approvals for Rs 55,000 crore from the Central Government in February 2019, he suggested that YSRCP members should recognize that it was only in 2022, under the leadership of Jagan Mohan Reddy that Phase-1 41.15 meters were brought for the first time.

“Director General of Polavaram Project said that 96,660 families in 373 suburban villages belonging to 222 revenue villages in 5 mandals of ASR district and 8 mandals of Eluru district are being inundated.
Out of this, 9 revenue villages in 8 mandals and 172 suburban villages within the 41.15 meter contour have 38,060 displaced families while a total of 58,600 displaced families are in 201 suburban villages, belonging to 132 revenue villages in 6 mandals from 41.15 meters to 45.72 meters contour,” the Minister explained the house.
