Praggnanandhaa second as Fedoseev extends lead

Warsaw (Poland) Apr 30 (UNI) GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu has bounced back from a rocky start to stay in contention for the top honours at the 2025 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland.
Despite suffering two early losses on the first day of blitz, the Indian chess prodigy has shown resilience, securing five victories and drawing against tournament leader GM Vladimir Fedoseev. As the event heads into its final day, Praggnanandhaa sits in sole second place, just 3.5 points behind the leader and with several contenders breathing down his neck.
Although the tournament has been a whirlwind for the young GM, he remains unshaken by the fluctuations of speed chess.
"It's a long event and you just have to keep going," Praggnanandhaa reflected, recalling his experience at Tata Steel Chess India 2024, where he turned around a rough start to finish strong. His ability to recover and persevere has been on full display, and his performance on Day 1 of the blitz has kept him within striking distance of the title.
Fedoseev, who surged ahead with an outstanding 8/9 score on Tuesday, leads with a commanding 16.5 points, but the chase for second place is far from settled.
Behind Praggnanandhaa, GMs Levon Aronian, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Aravindh Chithambaram are all within striking distance, and the final nine rounds will be crucial for determining the podium positions.
Despite a few early missteps, Praggnanandhaa's fighting spirit has been evident in his impressive victories. His draw against Fedoseev, after a dramatic blunder by both players, stands out as one of the most thrilling moments of Day 1. However, his battles against top-tier opponents are far from over, as the final rounds will test his ability to hold off the rising competition.
With the final day set to begin two hours earlier, at 3:30 pm IST, Praggnanandhaa will look to continue his strong comeback and push for a podium finish in what has already been a highly competitive event.
As GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave aptly put it, "There’s a huge pack fighting for second place, and I’m glad to be part of it after what looked to be a very bad day at the office."
With Fedoseev’s commanding lead and several players hot on his heels, the stage is set for a thrilling conclusion to the tournament.
The final day promises to be a gripping conclusion, with Praggnanandhaa among the key players vying for the top spots. UNI BDN SSP
