Chandigarh, Mar 19 (UNI) A meeting between representatives of farmer organisations and Union as well as Punjab ministers was held here on Wednesday with the two sides deciding to sit again on May 4.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said the meeting concluded positively in a constructive environment and the dialogue will continue.
He said the next meeting is scheduled for May 4.
The three-hour-long meeting was attended by Union Minister Prahlad Joshi and Piyush Goyal, besides Chauhan.
From the Punjab government side, cabinet ministers Harpal Singh Cheema, Gurmeet Khudian and LC Kataruchak were present.
Farmer leaders Jagjit Singh Dallewal and Sarvan Singh Pandher among others represented farmer organisations.
Notably, Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been agitating since February last year demanding a law to guarantee Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their produce.
Meanwhile, farmers' leader Abhimanyu Kohar said the agriculture minister has sought time to
have an inter-ministerial discussion on a law to guarantee MSP.
He also said farmers have urged the government not to end import duty on agriculture products from the USA under Trump's pressure as it will be proven a death warrant for Indian farmers.
Kohar said the minister assured him that nothing of the sort will happen and the government
won't take any decisions under any pressure. UNI GS MR SSP
