Dharamsala, May 8 (UNI) The 58th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was on Thursday night called off following a major power outage at the HPCA Stadium here.
The interruption occurred at 21:29 local time, when players and umpires left the field due to failure of multiple floodlight towers. Initially, two of the light towers went off, leaving just one operational. Despite efforts to restore power, the delay extended longer than anticipated.
By 21:43 local time, sources indicated that the match had been abandoned, although there was no immediate official statement. Shortly thereafter, unconfirmed reports suggested that the game had been called off due to security concerns, with IPL authorities instructing both teams to vacate the venue.
An official update issued later confirmed that the match had been abandoned due to a technical failure in the power grid affecting the stadium lighting. “The BCCI regrets the inconvenience caused to all in-stadium attendees,” the statement said.
Before the stoppage, Punjab Kings were in a commanding position at 122 for 1 in 10.1 overs. Young opener Priyansh Arya dazzled with a 70 off 34 balls, including 3 fours and 5 sixes, before being dismissed by T Natarajan. Prabhsimran Singh remained unbeaten on 50 off 28 deliveries, while captain Shreyas Iyer was yet to open his account.
The abandonment means both teams will share points, a result that could impact playoff calculations as the tournament enters its final phase.
