Punjab: Police uncover drug smuggling racket inside jail

Sangrur, May 5 (UNI) In a significant breakthrough, Sangrur Police have exposed a drug smuggling racket operating from within the district jail. During a search operation, mobile phones were recovered, leading to the disclosure of the racket.
The police seized 4 kg of heroin, Rs 5,50,000 in drug money, a Glock 9mm pistol, and 2 live cartridges.
According to SSP Sangrur Sartaj Singh Chahal, the police team recovered contraband during a search operation in the jail last month.
A case was registered against eight accused under the NDPS Act and Prison Act.
Further investigation led to the arrest of additional suspects, including a Class-IV employee, and the recovery of incriminating evidence. The police are working to dismantle the entire network involved in the drug smuggling racket.
He confirmed that the accused have previous criminal records, and the police are investigating their involvement in other cases.
