Randeep Surjewala attacks Naib Saini govt over electricity rate increase

Kaithal, Apr 6 (UNI) Indian National Congress General Secretary and MP Randeep Singh Surjewala, Congress MLA Aditya Surjewala and Sudeep Surjewala from Kaithal, along with Congress workers, staged a sit-in over the increase in electricity rates by the BJP government of Haryana.
They addressed a public meeting at Jawahar Park in Kaithal, followed by a foot march till Pehowa Chowk, and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner.
Randeep Surjewala and Aditya Surjewala strongly attacked the BJP government and Chief Minister Naib Saini.
Randeep Surjewala said that the BJP government of Haryana has raised Rs 5,000 crore annually from the pockets of Haryanavis by increasing the electricity rate. "It seems that the Naib Saini government has become an expert in making money disappear from the public's pocket," he said.
Surjewala said that from January 16, 2025, in the name of fuel surcharge, Haryana's electricity rate has been increased by 47 paise per unit, and now from April 1, 2025, the public is being penalised for voting for the BJP by increasing the electricity rates further.
He said though fisheries, poultry, beekeeping, pig rearing, mushroom cultivation, milk plant, are all part of farming, despite this, electricity consumption is being charged at Rs 6.50 per unit on them.
He said the BJP is also hitting those using tubewells for irrigation, and the electricity rates have been increased from Rs 6.48 per unit to Rs 7.35 per unit.
Surjewala said that its worst effect is being felt by the farmers of South Haryana, i.e. Rewari, Mahendragarh, Bhiwani, Jhajjhar and Gurgawa as they have to suffer, due to the use of tubewells because the groundwater level is below 400 feet.
In North Haryana i.e. Yamuna Nagar, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Kaithal, Jind etc., the ground water level has fallen below 300 to 400 feet and these farmers will also have to bear the consequences of using tubewells.
Although the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission has said that if the government wants to subsidise these tubewells, it can subsidise the consumer so that the rates do not increase, but the Naib Saini government has not made any such announcement, he said.
He also said that temples were not spared from this rise in electricity rates.

Randeep Surjewala said that Chief Minister Naib Saini should answer and give accounts on this recovery of 'Jaziya Kar'.
"Chief Minister Naib Saini, who looted false accolades by creating zero tax budget, should now reply to an additional Rs 5,000 crore loot being charged from this power increase. The Congress party demands that the increased electricity rates be withdrawn immediately, so that more than two crore 10 lakh people, who are included in the BPL category, and other Haryanvis can get relief. The BJP should know that if the electricity rates are not withdrawn, then there will be a mass movement and the public will never forgive them," he said.
