Ruchi Atreya's Solo Art expo showaszing pre-historic rock paintings, inaugurated

Chennai, Mar 18 (UNI) The Lalit Kala Akademi, Chennai, hosted a captivating solo
art exhibition by talented artist and researcher Ms.Ruchi Atreya (aka Ruchi Thakkar)
on Tuesday evening.
The exhibition, titled 'Reverberations of the Past' , will be open to public till March 23,
showcasing an extraordinary collection of paintings inspired by the pre-historic rock
paintings of India, according to a press release from the Organisers.
Padma Bhushan Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, the eminent industrialist and philanthropist,
inaugurated the exhibition.
Eminent artists, art historians and other enthusiasts from the world of arts from Tamil Nadu
as well as from other states graced the occasion.
A number of senior military officials are also expected to attend the event over the six days,
as the artist was a member of the military family.
Ms. Atreya’s works are a unique blend of texture and mixed media, offering an immersive and
realistic portrayal of ancient rock art. Through meticulous craftsmanship, she has recreated the
essence of prehistoric imagery, using layered textures to recreate realistic rock surfaces found
in ancient sites.
The prehistoric elements in her paintings are derived from actual rock paintings across India,
captured during her extensive PhD research field explorations.
Her ongoing PhD research dwelves deep into the artistic expressions of early hunter-gatherer
societies, attempting to establish the aesthetic principles of prehistoric rock art, which was, till
the early 20th century, not even considered as art.
This exhibition is a labour of love, deeply personal to the artist, who was born and brought up in
the scenic Satpura mountains.
Having grown up surrounded by nature and ancient rock shelters, Ms. Atreya’s artistic journey is
intrinsically linked to the very landscapes that once inspired the earliest artists of the subcontinent.
A highlight of the exhibition was a special series on ‘Nava Rasa’ – the nine fundamental human
emotions, each depicted using the colours traditionally associated with them.
This series seamlessly blends the prehistoric artistic elements with the emotional spectrum,
offering a fresh perspective on the universality of artistic expression across time.
The exhibition not only presents a visual treat, but also bridges the gap between history and
contemporary artistic expression.
Her artwork has attracted the viewers to journey through time, experiencing the raw beauty and
cultural significance of India’s earliest artistic expressions in a modern, textured format.
Art lovers, historians, and enthusiasts of prehistoric art are also invited to witness this remarkable
confluence of art and archaeology.
