SAD, Congress demand immediate conduct of girdawari for losses to standing wheat crop

Chandigarh, Apr 22 (UNI) The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Tuesday demanded immediate conduct of girdawari for losses to standing wheat crop due to recent hail storms and heavy rain across the state, particularly in the Kandi belt including Ropar and Noorpur Bedi areas.
In a statement here, Senior SAD leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said besides compensation for losses to standing wheat crops due to inclement weather, farmers whose wheat crops were destroyed due to fires should be given compensation immediately.
Dr Cheema said it was condemnable that instead of rising to the situation and providing succor to the suffering farmers, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government was oblivious to the situation.
“No girdwari has been done despite hundreds of acres of standing wheat crops have been destroyed''.
Bholath MLA and Chairman of the All India Kisan Congress Sukhpal Singh Khaira strongly demanded for immediate and adequate compensation for Punjab’s farmers who have suffered massive wheat crop losses due to recent incidents of fire, rain, and hailstorms across various parts of the state.
Citing the recent damage to standing wheat crops and harvested produce in grain markets due to hailstorms, thunderstorms, and fires, Khaira demanded a compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre for affected farmers to help them recover from the financial blow.
He emphasised that the state government must conduct a transparent and swift assessment of the losses and ensure that compensation reaches every affected farmer without delay.
