Hyderabad/New Delhi, Apr 3 (UNI) Union Minister and Telangana BJP President G Kishan Reddy has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to impose a stay on environmental destruction in the Kancha Gachibowli area of Hyderabad.
The apex court took suo motu cognizance of the issue after concerns were raised by various sections of society regarding the need to protect biodiversity across 400 acres of land.
The Supreme Court directed the Registrar of the Telangana High Court to inspect the site and submit a report. Based on key findings, the court has ordered an immediate halt to tree felling in the area.
Additionally, the Chief Secretary of Telangana has been directed to form an expert committee within a month, which will submit its report within six months.
In a statement on Thursday, Kishan Reddy emphasised that the Supreme Court acknowledged the attempt to damage forest resources in the region and questioned whether proper environmental clearances were obtained for such large-scale tree cutting. Despite the court’s intervention, he expressed disappointment that the state government allegedly continued with deforestation.
The Union minister urged Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to respect the Supreme Court’s decision, set aside personal differences, and prioritize environmental conservation.
He also demanded the unconditional release of students who were arrested while protesting to safeguard the biodiversity of Kancha Gachibowli.
