Security scaled up after attacks on farmers by Kuki militants

Imphal, July 3 (UNI) The Manipur government has decided to take up fresh security measures following repeated attacks on farmers and forcible seizure of grains by suspected Kuki militants.
The state police today said in a statement that in response to heightened concerns over security during the ongoing farming season, the authorities have significantly stepped up safety measures across the state to ensure protection of farmers and prevent untoward incidents.
A high-level Combined Headquarters (CHO) meeting was convened on June 28, chaired by the Security Advisor and attended by the chief secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and senior officials of security forces. The meeting focused on reviewing and strengthening security protocols, particularly in the wake of recent incidents in Phubala, Bishnupur district.
As part of the security enhancement, Manipur Police personnel have been deployed at vulnerable farming areas across both hill and valley regions. These deployments are intended to support Central forces in ensuring the safety of farmers engaged in agricultural activities. Central forces have been redeployed around the Phubala area to reinforce security arrangements.
Alert messages have been issued by the police headquarters to all district superintendents of police (SSPs), directing them to immediately implement heightened security protocols. Senior police officers are personally visiting sensitive areas to monitor and assess the security setup. These efforts include identifying agricultural zones that may require additional surveillance and presence of security forces.
To further tighten security, joint combing operations are being conducted regularly in fringe areas and remote hill regions. Flying squads and Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have been formed to provide immediate assistance when required.
Local coordination meetings have also been held by the district administration and police in collaboration with the public, focusing on farming schedules and related security arrangements, it was added.
Authorities have appealed to the public, particularly farmers, to remain vigilant and inform local police or security forces before proceeding with any farming activities in vulnerable or sensitive areas.
The Manipur Police Control Room remains active and accessible for any assistance or emergency response, it said.
