Bihar prepared to tackle flood situation in the state

Patna, July 3 (UNI) The Bihar government has completed all necessary preparations to tackle the possible flood situation in the state.
Bihar Water Resources Minister, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said here today that continuous monitoring was being done in the flood-prone areas and the authorities have been instructed not to leave any segment of embankments uninspected and all sites must be easily accessible.
Reports of the weak bridges and culverts near embankments have been prepared for special attention.He said that erosion control work at highly vulnerable sites along various rivers has been completed in advance and flood-fighting materials have been stocked at dangerous, highly sensitive, and sensitive locations. Central and regional flood control rooms have also been established at various levels.
The minister said that 394 sites along different rivers have been secured through anti-erosion work at an expenditure of Rs 1310.09 crore. Arrangements have been made to get 72- hour advance flood forecasts.
According to him “Embankment Ambulances” comprising a tractor with a portable generator, halogen lights, EC bags, nylon crates, empty geo-bags, filter material, and a team of at least ten workers have been deployed at high-risk sites. For continuous monitoring of 3,808 km long embankments across the state, one embankment worker has been assigned at every one kilometer.
He said that 11 flood safety teams headed by experienced and retired engineers have been formed to guide field engineers during emergencies.
Arrangements for continuous monitoring of river barrages have been made and any sudden increase would immediately be reported to regional and district officials.Choudhary said that flood safety measures have also been completed at the Kosi barrage and embankments in neighboring Nepal in coordination with Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology which has ensured real-time rainfall data and forecasts for river basins affecting North Bihar.
A liaison officer stationed in Kathmandu would be facilitating communication between Nepal and Bihar.UNI RS RN
