Sukanta hails Centre's decision to link Meghalaya with Assam through high-speed corridor

Kolkata, May 1 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Education & Development of North Eastern Region Sukanta Majumdar has said the Centre has taken a landmark decision to construct a greenfield high-speed corridor from landlocked Meghalaya with Assam with a cost of Rs 22,864 crore for the development of the northeastern states.
He said the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Nnarendra Modi, has approved the landmark infrastructure project of a 166.80 km Greenfield High-Speed Corridor (NH-6) from Mawlyngkhung near Shillong (Meghalaya) to Panchgram near Silchar (Assam), under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).
With a total outlay of Rs 22,864 crore, this corridor will dramatically enhance inter-state connectivity between Meghalaya and Assam, bridging a key gap in the Northeast’s road network, Majumdar said.
It is expected to reduce travel time, improve logistics efficiency, and create a more seamless movement of goods and people.
"Beyond infrastructure, this project is a catalyst for economic transformation — unlocking growth potential, fostering tourism, and generating employment across the region. " It reflects the Modi government’s unwavering commitment to accelerating development in the Northeast and bringing it closer to the national mainstream," he said.
