Kolkata, May 14 (UNI) Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday hailed the release of BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw after being detained by the Pakistani Rangers for 23 days.
Shaw had mistakenly crossed the border in Punjab on April 23 last.
" Welcome Home, BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw. I am overjoyed that our brave BSF Jawan, Purnam Kumar Shaw, has been safely handed over to India by Pakistan Rangers today at the Joint Check Post in Attari, Amritsar," the Nandigram MLA said on his X handle.
He said the handover was conducted peacefully and by the established protocols.
After being in custody since 23 April 2025, his return is a moment of pride and huge relief for the nation, the BJP leader said.
" Heartfelt gratitude to the Border Security Force ( BSF- High Command) for their unwavering commitment to get their Jawan back, and to the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Home Affairs for their relentless efforts in ensuring his safe return. Our Jawans are our Heroes. Jai Hind," Adhikari concluded.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, who had earlier in the day informed of the safe return of the BSF Jawan, also dialed Bholanath Shaw, father of the BSF personnel, and conveyed the Union Home Minister's best wishes to the families.
Majumdar, who is also the West Bengal unit BJP President, called the septuagenarian father at his Rishra home in the Hooghly district, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah has conveyed his best wishes to the family members after having anxious days.
