Telangana CM proposes name of Cherlapally Railway terminal after Potti Sriramulu

Hyderabad, Mar 17 (UNI) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday informed the Assembly that administrative problems could arise if universities and institutions in Telugu states have the same name.

To address this issue, the Chief Minister explained that universities and institutions in Telangana are being renamed with references to prominent Telangana figures.

Speaking in the Assembly during the introduction of Bills regarding the renaming of Telugu University, SC classification, and BC reservation, the Chief Minister stated that he is proposing to the Central Government to name the Cherlapally Railway Terminal after Potti Sriramulu.

The Chief Minister emphasised that no one should overlook the efforts made by Potti Sriramulu and that his sacrifice should be recognised and remembered.

"As part of administrative decisions, we have been honouring those who worked hard for the formation of Telangana by naming institutions after them. This process has been ongoing since the state's reorganisation ten years ago," Reddy added.

He criticised certain individuals in central positions for attempting to create misconceptions regarding these name changes.

"We have named NTR Health University after Kaloji, not to disrespect NTR. Similarly, Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University was renamed after Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University and the Horticulture University after Konda Lakshman Bapuji. The Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University was renamed after P V Narasimha Rao. As part of this process, we renamed Potti Sriramulu Telugu University after Suravaram Pratap Reddy."

Reddy clarified that if two universities have the same name, administrative confusion can arise, which is why Telangana's universities are being renamed after notable Telangana figures.

"Our intention is not to disrespect individuals," he said. "Those in responsible positions should refrain from attributing caste to these decisions, which were made in the wider public interest. Trying to divide society along caste or religious lines for political gain is wrong."

He cited the example of Gujarat, where the stadium named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was renamed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "We have not made such mistakes," Reddy remarked.

"Let's name the Cherlapally Railway Terminal after Potti Sriramulu. If you have the will, Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay should seek permission from the Centre.

"Let's also name the Balkampet Nature Cure Hospital after former Chief Minister K Rosaiah and unveil a statue of Rosaiah there to honour his services," he added.
