Telangana’s fine rice distribution scheme a landmark in food security: Minister

Hyderabad, Apr 4 (UNI) Telangana’s free fine rice distribution scheme has received an overwhelming response from the public and is being hailed as India’s largest food security initiative, said Irrigation & Civil Supplies Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Friday.
Speaking at a video conference with District Collectors led by Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari, the Minister said the scheme, launched on March 30 (Ugadi) by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, is a game-changer in public welfare.
“Nearly 3.10 crore people, or 85 per cent of the state’s population, will benefit from this programme,” he said, calling it a model of social justice.
Each beneficiary receives 6 kg of fine rice per month, replacing the earlier coarse rice, which was underutilised and often diverted. The government will distribute 30 lakh metric tonnes of rice annually, at a cost of Rs 13,000 crore.
Reddy warned against any irregularities and emphasised strict monitoring, transparency, and full involvement of public representatives. He urged MLAs, MLCs, and MPs to join the distribution process and share meals with beneficiaries to build trust.
The Minister announced that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy would have lunch with a beneficiary in Bhadrachalam on Sri Rama Navami (April 6), while he himself would join a family for dinner in Suryapet.
He also criticised the previous BRS government for issuing only 49,479 new ration cards in a decade. The Congress government, he said, is now working to issue 30 lakh new cards, aiming for saturation coverage.
Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari directed collectors to counter misinformation and ensure public awareness of the scheme’s benefits. She noted that in many districts, over 99 per cent coverage had already been achieved.
The government will soon launch physical distribution of new Tricolour (BPL) and Green (APL) ration cards. As of now, Telangana has 90 lakh cards covering 2.85 crore people, with total beneficiaries expected to reach 3.10 crore.
Later, Uttam Kumar Reddy held a follow-up video conference with public representatives and officials, urging them to actively participate and treat the programme as a mission to restore the dignity of the poor, an official statement said. UNI VV AKT SSP
