Telangana to fast-track Sita Rama and Sitamma Sagar irrigation projects: Minister

Hyderabad, May 10 (UNI) Telangana Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy reaffirmed the Congress government’s commitment to fast-tracking the Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project (SRLIP) and Sitamma Sagar Multi-Purpose Project (SSMPP), terming them as vital for southern Telangana’s irrigation and development.
Chairing a high-level review meeting at Jala Soudha on Saturday, attended by Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Ministers Tummala Nageswara Rao and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, and senior officials, the minister emphasised urgency in completing the long-pending projects. Former MLA Gummadi Narsaiah was also invited to highlight local concerns.
Reddy noted that the current government secured 67 TMC of Godavari water allocation for SRLIP, which had seen no allocation under the previous regime.
Officials reported 97 per cent completion of the main canal and successful trial runs of three pump houses, with land acquisition and forest clearance still posing challenges.
Reddy directed expedited action, daily on-site monitoring, and full coordination among departments to remove all hurdles. He also instructed submission of cost, land status, and priority payment plans for Finance Department consideration, adding that progress would be reviewed again in a month.
Regarding Sitamma Sagar, Reddy said efforts were underway to resolve pending environmental clearances and contest a Rs 53.41 crore NGT penalty. The project includes a proposed 282.8 MW hydroelectric unit, now under review by TGGENCO.
He assured that both projects would be completed efficiently and benefit regions like Yellandu, for which a separate technical assessment was ordered.
“This government will do whatever it takes to deliver these projects to the people,” the minister declared, an official statement said.
