TN: Armed police protection given to family of murdered ex-SI in Tirunelveli

Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu), Mar 22 (UNI) A round-the-clock armed police protection was given to the family of a retired sub inspector of police (SI), S.Zakhir Hussain Bijili, who was murdered by a gang over a land dispute, police said on Saturday.
The slain ex-police official’s son Izur Rahman Bijili in a video alleged that there is a threat to his family and he might be the next target as an unidentified man is watching his house. Tirunelveli City Commissioner of Police (CoP) Santosh Hadimani today ordered to provide armed police protection to his family, residing at Thottipalam in the city.
Sixty four year old Zakhir, who was a member of the Special Protection Group (SPG) of former Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi was hacked to death by a gang, when he was returning to house, after offering Namaz (prayer) in a mosque on March 18 at Kaatchi Mandapam in Tirunelveli town.
Zakhir, who was serving as ‘muthavalli’ (trustee) of Murtim Zarkhan Dargah in a video post on Facebook last month alleged that he was facing death threat for resisting encroachment of 36 cents of land belonging to Wakf Board by a converted Muslim Mohammed Thoufiq (32).
The land under dispute belongs to Noorunisha, wife of Thoufiq. However, Zakhir contended that the land belongs to Wakf Board and erected a shed resulting in an enemity between them.
Two persons identified as M.Akbar Sha (32) and S.Karthik had surrendered before Judicial Magistrate 4 in connection with the murder. While the prime accused Thoufiq was shot in the leg by a special police team, when he attempted to escape after attacking the cops at Reddiarpatti village here on March 19. His wife Noorunisha is still absconding.
Zakhir in a video posted on a social media platform, before he was murdered, alleged that he was facing death threat from Thoufiq over the land dispute and despite his complaint to Tirunelveli Town police Inspector P.Gopalakrishnan and then Tirunelveli town Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Senthil Kumar, no action was taken against him, instead the two police officials are colluding with the accused (Thoufiq), he said.
Following an inquiry, the CoP issued an order suspending the erring police official Gopalakrishnan, for failing to take action on the complaint filed by Zakhir.
Based on his recommendation, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal suspended Senthil Kumar, who is currently working as ACP, Intelligence in Coimbatore city.
