TN: Spectator gored to death, 24 injured in Jallikattu event

Pudukottai (Tamil Nadu), Mar 23 (UNI) A spectator was gored to death and 24 others were injured during the annual ‘Jallikattu’ (taming of bulls) event held at Annavasal village in Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday.
Five of those injured are critical, hospital sources said.
Police said the deceased was identified as M.Muthu Adaikalam (55) of Rajagopalapuram in the district.
A ferocious bull unleashed into the Jallikattu arena gored Muthu Adaikalam at the collection point, where he was watching the event. He sustained severe injury as the bull’s horn pierced through his chest.
The injured spectator was rushed to the Government Hospital at Annavasal in an ambulance, where he succumbed to the injuries without responding to the treatment.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu Minister for Law, S.Regupathy flagged off the event this morning.
Of the injured, five persons who sustained grievous injuries were admitted to the Pudukottai Government Medical College Hospital.
As many as 250 registered tamers and 633 bulls brought from various districts of the State took part in the day-long event.
The Jallikattu event was organized as part of the ongoing Panguni festival of the famous Viruthapureeswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Siva in the village.
