Tropical shifts fuel intense melting of West Antarctic ice shelves, says IIT Kharagpur study

Kharagpur, Mar 27 (UNI) A recent study undertaken by Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP) scientists has observed accelerated melting across major ice shelves in the Ross-Amundsen Sea sector in Antarctica between 1999 and 2018.
This was in contrast to the scenario two decades back (between 1979 and 1998) which was marked by a decrease in melt trends across the West Antarctic ice shelves.
The study, which offers fresh insights into the atmospheric drivers behind these dramatic shifts in Antarctic ice behaviour, was led by Prof. Pranab Deb, Centre for Ocean, River, Atmosphere and Land Sciences (CORAL) at IIT Kharagpur and co-authored by leading atmospheric scientists including David Bromwich from the Byrd Center's Polar Meteorology Group.
