Una in HP sizzles at 41.8 degrees

Shimla, May 15 (UNI) Heatwave conditions are intensifying in parts of Himachal Pradesh as Una sizzled at 41.8°C on Thursday, marking the second-highest maximum temperature of this summer season.
The Meteorological Centre, Shimla, has attributed the rise in temperature to prevailing dry conditions, even as a western disturbance has started becoming active over the region.
While most stations recorded above-normal temperatures, Sundernagar (37.6°C), Bhuntar (36.0°C), Kangra (37.8°C), and Bilaspur (38.7°C) remained notably hot. Tourist hotspots like Manali (27.2°C), Shimla (27.2°C), and Dharamshala (34.0°C) also saw a spike in mercury levels. In higher reaches, Keylong registered 19.8°C, Kalpa 22.9°C, and Kufri 21.3°C.
According to the evening Nowcast issued by the Meteorological Centre, light rain accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) is likely at isolated places in Mandi, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Shimla districts. Hailstorm activity is also expected in parts of Mandi (Padhar, Kataula, Jogindernagar) and Kullu (Nirmand region). Isolated rainfall may also occur in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts.
For the next 12 hours, the forecast indicates chances of light rain at isolated places in Mandi, Chamba, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Kangra, Kullu, and Shimla. The remaining districts are expected to experience no significant weather changes.
The advisory issued cautions of possible damage to plantation and standing crops, urging the public to avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorm events, stay away from water bodies, and keep livestock in safer areas.
As heatwave conditions prevail in the lower hills and plains, residents have been advised to stay hydrated and limit exposure during peak afternoon hours. The western disturbance is expected to bring partial relief in the coming days.
