UP govt spent Rs 2,500 cr for welfare of backward classes

Lucknow, Apr 18 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government has significantly increased financial commitment as with a total expenditure exceeding Rs 2,500 crore under various welfare schemes, the state government aims to bring tangible relief and progress to lakhs of individuals from backward communities, official sources said here on Friday.
Sources said that the initiative reflects the government's steadfast commitment to inclusive development, focusing on education, skill development, social support, housing and infrastructure to foster social empowerment.
According to the Backward Classes Welfare Department, the government has allocated Rs 168.75 crore under the Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme, benefitting over 7.94 lakh students from Classes 1 to 10. Simultaneously, Rs 1,981.45 crore was disbursed through the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme, supporting 21.31 lakh students in pursuing higher education from Class 11 onwards.
In a move to support the dignity and future of families, Rs 200 crore was spent on assisting in the marriage of economically disadvantaged daughters from backward communities, benefiting 1 lakh families and enabling them to begin a new chapter with dignity.
To equip students with digital skills and boost their employability, Rs 32.92 crore was invested in computer education for backward-class students, empowering 29,769 students with modern technical knowledge.
To enhance education and living conditions, the government allocated Rs 2 crore to maintain six hostels under the Hostel Maintenance Scheme in 2024–25. These hostels provide essential residential facilities to students from backward classes, supporting their educational journey in a secure and supportive environment.
