UP govt to launch major drainage drive ahead of monsoon

Lucknow, Apr 22 (UNI) Ahead of the monsoon, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched a statewide campaign to upgrade urban drainage systems, official sources said here on Tuesday.
Sources said that acting on Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's directives, the Urban Development Department has launched the drive, aiming to prevent the severe water logging that plagued cities in past years.
Sources said that the proactive measure aims to ensure better preparedness for heavy rains. "As part of the initiative, a virtual meeting was convened at the Directorate of Urban Local Bodies. During the meeting, Principal Secretary for Urban Development, Amrit Abhijat, addressed departmental officials, Municipal Commissioners and Executive Officers from across the state," they said.
The Principal Secretary said that strong and active steps are being taken to reduce water logging in urban areas to zero during this monsoon. He announced a three-level strategy, which includes complete cleaning of drains, regular maintenance of pumping stations and identification of sensitive spots using advanced drone surveys to prevent water-logging.
The drone technology will help conduct a detailed survey of the city drainage network. This will create digital maps to identify possible blockages in advance, allowing timely action.
Special cleaning teams are being formed by municipal bodies to clean the drains thoroughly and remove silt and waste. All sanitation workers will be provided with safety gear and proper safety standards will be followed.
All pumping stations across the state will be repaired and maintained on time. Emergency teams equipped with high-capacity mobile pumps will be deployed at sensitive locations. This campaign includes not just cleaning, but also repairing and rebuilding damaged parts of the drainage network.
The Urban Development Department has directed all officers to complete all preparations by the end of June, before the expected first rainfall.
