Youth gored to death, 114 injured in 4 Jallikattu events in TN

Madurai, Mar 16 (UNI) A 22-year-old youth was gored to death and as many as 114 others, including bull tamers and spectators, were injured in four ‘Jallikattu’ (taming of bulls) events held at four places in Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu on Sunday.
Police said the deceased was identified as Mahesh Pandian, a bull tamer hailing from Kachirayiruppu village in Madurai district.
He sustained severe injury on the chest, when a ferocious bull unleashed into the Jallikattu arena gored him, while he attempted to tame it.
He was rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital, where he succumbed to injury without responding to the treatment.
Mahesh Pandian, who is working in China, returned to his native recently on leave.
Thirty-six others including bull tamers and spectators were injured in the day-long event held at Kalaignar Centenary Jallikattu Arena at Keelakarai near Alanganallur in Madurai.
The event was organized by the DMK functionaries to mark the 72nd birthday of Chief Minister M K Stalin.
Reports reaching here said at least 41 persons were injured, 11 of them grievously in the Jallikattu event held at Mangalapuram village near Alangudi in Pudukottai district. The event was organized as part of the Muneeswaran temple festival.
As many as 654 bulls brought from various districts and 300 bull tamers took part in the event. The injured were admitted to Pudukottai Government Medical College Hospital and government hospital at Alangudi for treatment.
In another event held at Periyakurumbapatti village in Pudukottai, 13 persons were injured of which seven of them were treated at government and private hospitals.
740 bulls and 250 bull tamers participated in the event.
In Tiruchirapalli, 24 persons were injured in the Jallikattu event held at Anbil village.
While 11 of them, who sustained multiple injuries were admitted to the government hospital at Lalgudi, the remaining were treated as out-patients.
