"Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital " becomes first hospital based on solar energy in Bihar

Patna, June 07 (UNI) " Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital " has become the first hospital in Bihar which is completely based on solar energy, with the installation of a solar power plant in its premises, funded by General Insurance Corporation(GIC).
" Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital ", located in Mastichak in Saran district of Bihar, will save Rs 1.5 crore every year, earlier spent on the electricity bill and the fund thus saved after the installation of the solar power plant, will be utilised for free treatment of 5000 poor patients annually.
Bihar Education Minister Sunil Kumar inaugurated the solar power plant, having generation capacity of 800 KW, which has been funded by GIC. He also inaugurated a newly constructed hostel for 200 girl students selected under " football to eyeball " program of the hospital. The hostel has been constructed with funds provided by GIC.
Kumar while speaking on the occasion, said that the Education Department would extend its full support to the hospital in all possible ways. He appreciated the quality treatment being provided to poor patients free of cost for various ailments related to eyes.
Chairman cum Managing Director(CMD) of GIC Narayanan Ramaswamy said that fund of Rs 10.5 crores had been provided to Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital for setting up solar power plant and construction of hostel for girls selected under " football to eyeball " programme. Earlier, GIC had funded cost of free treatment of 600 poor patients and also provided a bus to the hospital, he said and added that more assistance would be provided to the hospital in the days ahead.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Hospital Mrityunjay Tiwari said that 200 poor girls had been selected under "football to eyeball " programme and they would undergo a year foundation course before pursuing a year course of Optometry. After pursuing the course of Optometry, girls would get the job in hospital itself, he added.
" At present, Optometrists engaged in Hospital, are screening eyes of more than 10,000 patients annually ", Tiwari said adding that target had been fixed to associate 1500 girls under " football to eyeball" programme.
