‘Constitution Assassination Day’ observance: Mamata Banerjee accuses BJP of hypocrisy

Kolkata, June 18 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Central Government today, accusing it of "violating the Constitution daily" while planning to mark June 25 as "Samvidhan Hatya Diwas" (Constitution Assassination Day) to commemorate the anniversary of the Emergency imposed in 1975.

Addressing a press conference here, Banerjee questioned the BJP’s credibility in observing such a day, claiming the party has itself become a :persistent violator" of constitutional values and democratic norms.

“Those who break the Constitution every day are now pretending to mourn its death. This is pure hypocrisy,” the Trinamool Congress supremo said, lashing out at the Centre's ruling coalition spearhead.

She pointed to instances such as the toppling of elected governments in Maharashtra and Bihar as evidence of what she called the BJP’s “backdoor politics” and erosion of federalism.

“Is removing elected governments through backdoor deals not an attack on the Constitution?” she asked.

The chief minister was referring to a letter written to state chief secretary Monoj Pant where it has been mentioned that June 25 has been notified as "Samvidhan Hatya Diwas" (Constitution Assassination Day) vide Ministry of Home Affairs Notification dated 11 July 2024.

“Emergency Witnessed a sweeping suspension of civil liberties, erosion of constitutional safeguards and unprecedented centralisation of executive power. Fundamental rights were breached, press silenced under strict censorship, thousands of political leaders, journalists, and civil society members were imprisoned,” the letter read.

“This year, on 23th June 2025, the nation observes the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency - an occasion not merely for remembrance but for deep reflection and renewed commitment to democratic values and constitutional morality. In this regard, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, is undertaking a year long commemoration starting on June 25, 2025 till June 25, 2026,” the letter added.

The letter requested the chief secretary to appoint a Nodal Officer from the state for coordination with the Ministry of Culture so that the details of the programme can be shared.

Banerjee dismissed the Centre's move as a political smokescreen meant to distract from ongoing subversions of democracy.

“What we are witnessing today is a silent emergency — one without announcements, but with more dangerous implications,” she said, accusing the BJP of systematically weakening institutions, silencing dissent, and misusing central agencies for political vendetta.

Her remarks come amid rising tensions between the Centre and non-BJP-ruled states, with several opposition leaders alleging overreach by central authorities and interference in state governance.

In response, BJP leaders accused Banerjee of trying to whitewash the Congress’s legacy and deflect attention from her own government’s record. Party spokespersons defended the June 25 observance, saying it serves as a national reminder of the perils of constitutional misuse. UNI XC SSP
