‘Foot Rot’ disease threatens Kasturi Basmati crop in Sirmaur

Nahan, June 23 (UNI) The Kasturi Basmati rice crop, cultivated in the lower regions of Sirmaur district, is under severe threat from ‘Bakani Foot Rot’ disease.
Caused by the fungus Gibberella fujikuroi, the infection is resulting in yellowing and dwarfing of plants, triggering concerns among farmers about a significant drop in both yield and quality.
The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Dhaula Kuan has confirmed the outbreak and attributed it to the use of infected seeds and lack of timely preventive measures. Dr. Pankaj, an expert at the KVK, explained that the disease primarily affects the roots and stem base of rice plants, leading to weak growth and, in many cases, crop failure.
“The most effective way to prevent this disease is to use certified and disease-free seeds,” said Dr. Pankaj. “Farmers should remain vigilant and consult agricultural experts before applying any fungicide.” He added that proper soil drainage and avoiding excessive use of nitrogen-based fertilizers can also help in managing the disease.
The KVK has advised farmers to regularly inspect their fields and report early symptoms such as yellowing leaves, stunted height, and wilting. Prompt action can contain the spread and save the remaining crop.
Foot Rot poses a serious risk to the region’s renowned Kasturi Basmati variety, which is prized for its aroma and export potential. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra has assured full support to affected farmers and urged them to reach out without delay.
With timely monitoring and scientific intervention, the damage can be controlled. However, any delay could cost farmers heavily this season.
