"Have you seen any CM visiting door to door like this to stand beside bereaved families," Suvendu asks at Birpur

Burdwan, Oct 20 (UNI) "I have not been given the power by God to bring back those who have died. I have no words to express condolence. I have come here as my duty and to give a message that I am by your side. I have given priority to stand beside these families," West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Tuesday after meeting the bereaved family at Birpur village.
He further asked "Have you ever seen a Chief Minister visiting door to door of the bereaved families? Since my predecessor didn't do so, that doesn't mean that I won't." He ridiculed the previous Mamata Banerjee government saying: "She continued with Dandiya, Carnival despite some disasters during the pujas."
The Chief Minister visited Birpur village under Madhabdihi PS in East Burdwan to meet the shocked Bej family. He was accompanied by the Minister of State (Industry), Moumita Biswas Mishra, the DM, East Burdwan, MLA, Raina. He arrived at the village in a helicopter and returned after half an hour.
The visit comes in the wake of the Saturday's Chorabagan stampede in Kolkata, which has cast a shadow of gloom over Durga Puja festivities across the state.
Tagor Bej, a housewife had gone to Kolkata on Thursday along with her son Sandeep and daughter Agomoni to see Durga Puja pandals. In the horrific stampede at Chorabagan pandal, Tagor and Sandeep died, while Agomoni miraculously survived.
Meeting the bereaved husband Sanjay and family members at their mud house, the Chief Minister said the government stands by them.
Taking a swipe at critics, the CM said: "We don't need to be taught our responsibility. Earlier also there have been disasters in puja pandals. Last year in Kolkata 13 people died due to electrocution. During Puja time last year, many suffered in flash floods in Nagrakata of Jalpaiguri. This Chief Minister, unlike the previous Chief Minister, does not dismiss such disasters as small incidents. The affected families don't have to knock the Court seeking judicial inquiry. The government itself has sought that inquiry." Yesterday itself, state's Chief Secretary has mailed a letter seeking judicial probe, he added.
The CM asked, "Has any government ever given Rs 25 lakh compensation for such deaths before?"
