(HOLD)Cosmoserve Space opens India's first integrated space debris removal facility in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Nov 5 (UNI) Cosmoserve Space on Thursday inaugurated Base 1, India's first private integrated space debris removal facility and the world's sixth facility equipped with space vision effect and microgravity simulation technologies, in Hyderabad.
The facility was inaugurated by union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh, Telangana Minister for IT, Electronics and Communications D Sridhar Babu, Cosmoserve Space Founder and CEO Dr Chiranjeevi Phanindra, a former ISRO scientist and Gaganyaan mission Deputy Project Director, in the presence of Telangana IT Advisor Sai Krishna and other space industry leaders including former Director of ISRO Dr A K Anilkumar and Former Associate Director of ISRO Dr Seshagiri Rao.
The facility brings together infrastructure for designing, building, testing and operating technologies for satellite servicing and space debris removal.
It houses four key facilities, including an Orbital Rendezvous and Capture Lab, Space Robotics Innovation Lab, an ISO Class 8 satellite integration clean room and a Mission Simulation and Control Centre.
The facility will also support satellite servicing activities, including in-orbit repairs and refuelling, besides developing robotic systems for capturing and removing defunct satellites and other space debris.
Speaking on the occasion, Sridhar Babu said Hyderabad was emerging as a major hub for space innovation, with more than 30 spacetech companies operating in the city. These companies were developing technologies ranging from launch vehicles and space data centres to debris removal systems and drug discovery platforms.
He said the Telangana government was planning an exclusive Space City in the upcoming Bharat Future City to strengthen the state's position in the global space technology sector.
Chiranjeevi said the facility would enable the company to design, build, and test and operate its missions under one roof.
Space debris was increasingly becoming a major challenge to global space ambitions, including India's Gaganyaan programme and the proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station, he added.
The company currently sources nearly 60 per cent of its mission components locally and aims to develop more critical technologies in-house to reduce dependence on imported optics, avionics and space-grade electronics, he said.
The inauguration follows the company's recent USD 6 million seed funding round, taking its total funding to more than USD 9 million, he informed.
Japan-based Rebright Partners and Indian investors Aranya Holdings, Naandi Ventures, AUM Ventures and Shakti VC participated in the funding round, said Chiranjeevi.
In July 2026, Cosmoserve flew its first payload, Mission Embrace, aboard Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 rocket. Though the robotic capture petals did not deploy as planned, the mission provided valuable data for further technology development.
The company said the latest funding would support Base 1, technology demonstrations and two upcoming missions.
According to the company, nearly 10,000 of the approximately 28,000 satellites in orbit are dead or non-operational, highlighting the growing need for technologies to manage space debris and ensure the long-term sustainability of space activities.
The company said Earth's orbit was increasingly crowded, with an estimated 68,000 debris objects smaller than 10 cm, 1.5 million fragments measuring 1–2 cm and nearly 230 million smaller pieces ranging from 1 mm to 1 cm.
Even tiny fragments travelling at high speeds posed serious risks to operational satellites, spacecraft and space missions, including the International Space Station, the company said.
Around 660 collisions and explosions have been recorded in space, generating nearly 58,000 tracked debris fragments. With an estimated 1.3 million new satellites expected to be launched over the next decade, the global market for space debris removal and satellite servicing is projected to reach USD 14.5 billion by 2030, the company said.
Cosmoserve has developed a proprietary Dual Spacecraft Architecture to make satellite servicing more economical.
Under this model, a larger Orbital Service Station will function as an in-space logistics hub carrying fuel, equipment and spare parts, while a smaller Autonomous Service Vehicle will travel to multiple satellites to capture, dock with, diagnose, repair or remove them from orbit.
The company said the system was designed to enable two spacecraft to service up to 100 satellites, potentially reducing servicing costs from around USD 10 million to less than USD 1 million per satellite.
Cosmoserve's upcoming milestones include testing its robotic capture systems through microgravity flights, re-flying its Mission Embrace and conducting a full-scale space debris capture demonstration in 2027, the company added.
