15-year-old Karnataka prodigy Uma Kashvi scripts WPL history

Bengaluru, Oct 29 (UNI) Karnataka's 15-year-old all-rounder Uma Kashvi has become the youngest player ever bought at a Women's Premier League (WPL) auction, with Delhi Capitals signing the teenager for Rs 10 lakh in a move that underlines the growing spotlight on India's emerging cricketing talent.
At 15 years and 202 days, Kashvi broke the record previously held by Deeya Yadav, who was 16 when she was signed at last year's auction. Her selection at the 2027 auction in Kochi on October 28 marks a major milestone for a cricketer who has already made her presence felt with extraordinary performances in age-group cricket.
The most striking evidence of her potential came in the 2025-26 Women's Under-15 One-Day Trophy, where she finished as the tournament's leading run-scorer with 516 runs at an average of 172, including three centuries and a half-century.
Against Manipur on January 10, 2026, Kashvi hammered an unbeaten 158 off just 66 balls, striking 23 fours and seven sixes. Her explosive innings powered Karnataka to 321 for five in 35 overs, before the side sealed a commanding 275-run victory.
A right-arm off-spinner capable of contributing in the middle order, Kashvi has demonstrated that her promise extends beyond batting. In Karnataka's Under-19 T20 Trophy quarter-final against Vidarbha on October 22, she claimed three wickets for 18 runs in four overs and scored 11 runs as Karnataka defended 140 for seven to win by six runs. She was named Player of the Match.
Her progression has been rapid. Having started training at a cricket academy at around seven and a half years of age, she scored an unbeaten 217 in a junior club-level inter-school tournament in Bengaluru at 12. She has since captained Karnataka's Under-15 side, led Bengaluru Blasters in the Maharani Trophy and represented India Under-19 against Sri Lanka in June and July this year.
She claimed four wickets in three T20 matches and two wickets in two one-day games during the series against Sri Lanka.
Delhi Capitals head coach Jonathan Batty said the franchise had been following Kashvi's progress through its scouting network and believed she had the potential to develop into a major player.
"We believe she could become an absolute superstar in the future," Batty said, adding that the signing was a long-term investment rather than an expectation of immediate results.
At 15, Kashvi is still at the beginning of her senior career, and her immediate WPL debut could be affected by her involvement in India's Under-19 World Cup plans, with the tournament scheduled in Bangladesh and Nepal overlapping with the league.
Delhi Capitals added four players at the auction, signing Kashvi, Kiran Navgire, Nazma Khan and Scotland spinner Kirstie Gordon. Navgire fetched Rs 75 lakh, while the other three were bought for Rs 10 lakh each.
For Karnataka, Kashvi's record-breaking signing offers a compelling glimpse of the state's next generation of women's cricket talent. For Delhi Capitals, it is a calculated investment in a teenager whose age-group numbers and all-round performances have already made her one to watch.
