180 trekkers stranded in Uttarakhand; 1,500 pilgrims rescued safely from Kedarnath route; rain, snow hamper rescue operation

Dehradun, Sep 28 (UNI) As many as 180 trekkers were left stranded due to inclement weather in the high altitudes of Uttarakhand even as 1,500 pilgrims were rescued safely from the Kedarnath route after they were stuck along the way on Sunday night following a landslide.
Majority of the stranded trekkers were in Uttarkashi of Garhwal while 43 were in Bageshwar of Kumaon.
Heavy rain and snowfall in the higher hills of Uttarkashi and Bageshwar districts left 149 trekkers stranded since Monday morning. Of these, nearly 11 were safely rescued from Kalindi Khal area of Kalindi Trek in Uttarkashi.
The 11 trekkers were flown to Harsil Helipad and administered medical aid.
A statement issued by the State Disaster Response Force(SDRF) informed that two of the rescue officials were on the Kalindi Khal track with the remaining eight trekkers of the group as the rescue operations were impacted due to rain and snowfall in the region.
According to SDRF, all the stranded trekkers were safe as rescuers were waiting to resume work with improvement in weather.
Of 180 stranded trekkers, 137 were on nine treks of Uttarkashi and 43 were on Khathi area of Pindari Glacier in Bageshwar.
Earlier, Joint Rescue Operations conducted by the SDRF, Disaster Management Department, local police and District administration in Chhirbasa landslide zone resulted in the safe rescue of 1,500 Kedarnath pilgrims who were brought to Gaurikund late night Sunday.
The rescue operation was launched jointly by the teams of SDRF, NDRF and DDRF.
Pilgrims were left stranded due to a landslide at Chhirbasa area, nearly three kilometers ahead of Gaurikund towards Kedarnath.
Rescue work was rendered difficult due to the constant falling of rocks and stones from hilltops making the pilgrims' movement difficult.
Among the stranded pilgrims, six were foreigners held up at Mount Sudarshan and Mount Shivlinga treks of Tapovan Base Camp, while other trekkers were stranded at Dalandi Base on Kalandi Pass trek, Nandanvan of Bhagirathi I and Bhagirathi II treks, Auden’s Col Base Camp of Auden’s Col Pass, Vasukital of Mount Satopanth and Mount Jogin trek.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami instructed officials that the safety of trekkers, mountaineers and porters must be kept as the top priority during the rescue operation.
He asked them to bring in additional resources and directed that all concerned agencies must conduct the operation effectively with mutual coordination.
Officials informed the Chief Minister that eight helicopters were deployed for the rescue operation. Dhami directed that all available aerial resources must be utilised immediately in the best possible way.
He instructed them to keep heli-ambulances on standby so that immediate medical assistance could be provided to the trekkers.
