46 pc of India’s commercial lending goes to Micro-Business Entrepreneurs: TransUnion CIBIL

Hyderabad, Oct 29 (UNI) Micro-business entrepreneurs (MBE) account for 46 per cent of India’s commercial lending, with outstanding loans worth Rs 29.6 lakh crore, according to a joint report by TransUnion CIBIL and the National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC), released in Hyderabad on Thursday.
Talking to the media, Ejaz Nazeer, Chief Product Officer of TransUnion CIBIL, said nearly four crore individuals had taken loans for business purposes, while around 63 lakh business entities had loans of up to Rs 2 crore. He noted that many entrepreneurs continued to borrow in their personal capacity rather than in the name of their businesses, limiting their access to suitable credit facilities as they expand.
The report highlighted that Telangana had outstanding micro-business loans of Rs 1.74 lakh crore, accounting for around 6 per cent of the national total and ranking sixth among states. Individual business borrowing in Telangana grew at a compound annual rate of 26 per cent, compared with 21 per cent nationally.
However, loans against property accounted for 53 per cent of the State’s micro-business lending, against the national average of 37 per cent. The delinquency rate in Telangana stood at 1.7 per cent, below the national level of around 1.9 per cent.
The report identified a significant opportunity to help entrepreneurs build credit histories in their businesses’ names. It noted that around 19.6 lakh entrepreneurs in Telangana and 23.8 lakh in Andhra Pradesh borrowed for business purposes in their individual capacity but had never borrowed as business entities, despite many having healthy credit profiles.
Suresh Babu, Zonal General Manager (South Zone) of NSIC, said helping these entrepreneurs access enterprise-level credit could improve their working capital and growth financing while reducing dependence on personal assets as collateral. NSIC would continue working with lenders and partners to help small businesses formalise and expand, he added.
