9 acres of sugarcane burnt in fire, family demands compensation in Maha

Nandurbar, Oct 9 (UNI) Nearly nine acres of sugarcane belonging to a woman farmer were destroyed in a fire allegedly caused by a snapped electricity wire in the Dhoorkheda area near Prakasha in Nandurbar district in Maharashtra. The affected farming family, already struggling with drought, has demanded immediate compensation for the extensive losses, alleging that negligence in maintaining the electricity lines led to the destruction of their crop.
The sugarcane crop owned by farmer Anita Chaudhary was completely gutted just a month before it was due for harvesting, causing losses estimated at several lakhs of rupees. The incident has dealt a severe blow to the family's hopes of recovering from the ongoing drought conditions.
According to the farmer, an application had been submitted to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) seeking repairs to sagging electricity wires. However, the alleged failure to address the issue resulted in a wire snapping and triggering a massive fire in the sugarcane field.
Local farmers rushed to the spot and made desperate efforts to control the blaze with the help of tractors. However, their efforts proved insufficient to save the crop, which was reduced to ashes.
Revenue department and MSEDCL officials have conducted a panchnama to assess the damage. The affected farming family has demanded immediate compensation for the extensive losses, alleging that negligence in maintaining the electricity lines led to the destruction of their crop.
