Aaditya Thackeray rejects Rs 500 cr defamation notice, stands by posts

Mumbai, Sep 24 (UNI) Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray has rejected the Rs 500 crore defamation notice served by Satish Salian, father of late Disha Salian, and refused to withdraw his social media posts, apologise or pay the demanded compensation.
In his 25-page legal reply, sent through Supreme Court advocate Anshuman Sinha, Thackeray denied the allegations and described the notice as legally untenable.
He maintained that his September 16 posts in English and Marathi did not name or identify Satish Salian.
His legal team argued that the posts were directed at what Thackeray described as a continuing political and media campaign linking his name to Disha Salian's death, and not against her father personally.
The reply said an individual could not be linked to a general statement by subsequently inserting his name into the surrounding circumstances.
Thackeray also rejected the Rs 500 crore compensation demand, saying the notice did not provide any calculation, specific financial loss or basis for arriving at such a large amount.
He further stated that he stood by his earlier position that he had never met or known Disha Salian.
The reply referred to statements and court records from earlier stages of the case and claimed that there were differences between Satish Salian's earlier and subsequent positions concerning the circumstances of his daughter's death.
Thackeray's side also maintained that the ongoing investigation should be allowed to establish the facts independently and that the commencement of a probe should not by itself be treated as evidence against any individual.
The Bombay High Court had directed a fresh CBI investigation into Disha Salian's death earlier this month.
The CBI subsequently registered an FIR, while the court made it clear that no person should be treated as an accused unless material emerging during the investigation provides grounds for such a conclusion.
The legal confrontation began after Satish Salian issued the defamation notice on September 17 over Thackeray's September 16 posts. Salian's side had sought an apology and Rs 500 crore in damages.
With Thackeray now formally rejecting the demand, the dispute remains centred on the contents of the social media posts and whether they amounted to a defamatory reference to Satish Salian, while the separate CBI investigation into Disha Salian's death continues. UNI AAA SAS
