ABVP’s DUSU win: BJP celebrates, calls it rejection of Congress’ ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’

New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) Those who consider the Delhi University Students’ union (DUSU) elections a minor exercise involving students can think again. In the current political scenario, with the BJP’s ‘panchayat to Parliament’ approach, every election matters, and DUSU more so in the wake of the Jantar Mantar Gen Z protests and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ outreach to youth.
The ABVP, the student organisation affiliated with the BJP’s ideological fountainhead, the RSS, maintained its dominance in the DUSU elections on Saturday, securing three of the four key posts, including the presidency. Independent candidate and NSUI rebel Deepanshu Shaukeen won the vice-president’s post. ABVP’s elected office-bearers include Yash Dabas as president, Riya Chhawdi as secretary and Lakshya Raj Singh as joint secretary.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju described the outcome as “a rejection of the Congress’ ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ narrative.”
“ABVP has once again asserted a strong presence by securing a massive victory, while the Congress party failed to win a single seat, scoring a big zero yet again. I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the ABVP candidates, who have made a habit of winning at Delhi University. Once again, congratulations! The ‘youth ki goonj’ narrative has been soundly rejected, and the students have spoken loud and clear. In a way, the DUSU election serves as a referendum that reflects the true voice of the youth,” he said.

BJP president Nitin Nabin said the “victory reflects the youth’s continued faith in positive and constructive student politics, rooted in the spirit of Nation First, and their strong resolve to contribute to the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’.”
DUSU elections are important because students from across the country study at Delhi University. Political parties do not contest but are represented through their student wings, in the case of BJP it is the ABVP, the student wing of RSS—the saffron party’s ideological fountainhead. Then there is Congress-backed National Students’ union of India (NSUI) and Left-wing supported groups such as AISA. Leaders admit that most student unions are funded and taken care of by respective political parties.
Now why DUSU elections in 2026 are important is because the BJP is seeing is a barometer of youth sentiment—a key vote base for any party. A strong ABVP performance has given the saffron party an opportunity to project support among Gen Z and first-time voters. Any swing against ABVP could have been seen as a warning sign of changing political preferences among urban youth.
Last year, NSUI won one of the four main posts, but the political context was different then. Gen Z protests and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation were yet to happen.
A victory of Gen Z students affiliated to the saffron side right in the national capital allows the BJP to shape a political narrative ahead of upcoming Assembly elections. Meanwhile, the DUSU victory also provides the BJP-RSS machinery an opportunity to control and contain influence of rival political ideologies.UNI VS AAB
