First next-gen missile vessel for Indian Navy keel laid at Cochin Shipyard

New Delhi, Sep 19 (UNI) The keel of the Indian Navy’s first Next Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV) was laid at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi, marking the formal commencement of construction of the advanced missile vessel project.
The keel-laying ceremony was held in the presence of Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, who was the chief guest. Senior officials from the Navy and CSL also attended the ceremony.
The contract for construction of the NGMVs was signed with CSL in March 2023. The vessels are being designed to carry advanced weapons and sensor systems aimed at strengthening the Indian Navy’s combat capabilities.
The induction of the NGMVs is expected to add to the Navy’s ability to operate in an increasingly complex maritime environment in the Indian Ocean Region, in line with its objective of maintaining a future-ready and combat-ready force.
The project also highlights the expanding role of India’s domestic defence industry in naval shipbuilding. According to the Defence Ministry, all major role-defining equipment planned for the vessels is being indigenously developed and manufactured.
The programme is consequently aligned with the government’s broader push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India and Make for the World, with greater emphasis on reducing dependence on foreign sources for critical defence equipment.
The keel-laying of the first NGMV comes as the Navy continues to expand and modernise its fleet through indigenous warship construction, with Indian shipyards increasingly undertaking the design and construction of sophisticated platforms and combat systems.
