After 30 years, Jargo Dam in Mirzapur fills up with water following UP CM's efforts, bringing cheer to farmers

Lucknow, Oct 28 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government is consistently working to strengthen the state's irrigation infrastructure and ensure adequate water supply to farmers.
In a significant achievement in this direction, water supply to Jargo Dam in Mirzapur has been restored following the repair and rehabilitation of both under-sluice gates of the Meja-Jargo Link Canal, which had remained defective for several decades.
After nearly 30 years, the prospect of Jargo Dam filling up has raised fresh hopes among farmers in the region. Currently, 229 cusecs of water is being supplied to the dam through the Meja-Jargo Link Canal.
Principal Secretary, Irrigation and Water Resources, Anil Garg, said here on Wednesday that, "Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government is focusing on improving irrigation facilities and ensuring the optimal utilisation of available water resources. The repair of the gates of the Meja-Jargo Link Canal is an important example of this approach, demonstrating how a decades-old problem was resolved through a combination of modern technology and specialised engineering."
He added, "The Meja-Jargo Link Canal is a vital component of Mirzapur's agricultural irrigation system. It connects various reservoirs and canals to carry water to Jargo Dam. With a length of approximately 71.130 kilometres and a carrying capacity of 580 cusecs, the canal plays a crucial role in irrigating agricultural land in the region."
The two under-sluice gates installed at the canal head had remained defective for a long time. Continuous leakage through these gates was affecting water management, resulting in the wastage of nearly 150 cusecs of water. This not only prevented the optimal utilisation of available irrigation water but also made it difficult to remove silt from the downstream stretch of the canal and regulate water flow.
Leakage had also prevented the removal of accumulated silt along a stretch of nearly 10 kilometres downstream. This affected the canal's water-carrying capacity and the overall irrigation system, directly impacting farmers dependent on canal water for their kharif and rabi crops.
Chief Engineer (Mechanical) Upendra Singh said, "Repairing the gates was far from a routine engineering task. The gates were located approximately 15 metres below the water surface, where the pressure was around 2.5 times atmospheric pressure. Due to extensive leakage, direct underwater inspection posed significant risks even for divers."
The gate operating mechanisms had been damaged, while water continued to leak through gaps between the rubber seals and the walls.
To address the problem, a team from the Irrigation Workshop Division, Bareilly, under the Irrigation and Water Resources Department, adopted a phased strategy.
First, specially designed materials were used to temporarily arrest the leakage, creating safer conditions for underwater operations. Subsequently, ROV equipped with a 4K video camera was deployed underwater using modern technology. It was used to inspect both sides of the gates and identify damaged sections, gaps between the rubber seals and holes in the walls.
The technology enabled a precise assessment of areas where direct inspection by divers would have been hazardous.
Following the inspection, the damaged gate grooves were repaired, and a new stop-log gate was fabricated and installed underwater. Both service gates were then removed for repairs. The old, damaged rubber seals were replaced, along with new rollers and bearings.
Holes in the walls around the gates were filled with specialised high-pressure repair material. After the repairs were completed, the gates were reinstalled and subjected to leakage testing.
These measures resolved the long-standing leakage problem and restored the system's ability to regulate water flow. The work has prevented the wastage of nearly 150 cusecs of water while also paving the way for silt removal from the downstream stretch of the canal.
Improved water supply to Jargo Dam has begun delivering direct benefits to the agricultural sector in Mirzapur. Approximately 15,000 farmers are benefiting from the project, while irrigation facilities are being provided to nearly 6,300 hectares of agricultural land.
The improvement is expected to boost agricultural production during both the kharif and rabi seasons. Preventing water wastage will also enable more efficient utilisation of the reservoir and canal network. Furthermore, the removal of accumulated silt will help maintain better water flow through the canal in the future. UNI MBD NST
